Employability and Skills Programme

The Humber EBP has launched a major new Employability Skills Programme designed to develop the qualities, attitudes and behaviours that underpin Communication Skills, Problem Solving, Team Work and Creative Thinking.  It comprises a series of short activities to be delivered to groups before they go out on Work Experience (although it could also be delivered as part of a Personal Development/Life skills Programme) to give learners a deeper understanding of the skills they need to practise on their placement.  These are the skills that have been identified as valuable by employers.

Hull University Business School

At Hull University Business School we’re working to connect young people with the benefits of Higher Education. We have built strong relationships with schools throughout the region, delivering taster events and activities for pupils. We’ve also developed a Schools and Colleges Business Advisory forum which brings together teachers of business-related subjects with our team to discuss how we can work together.

We are delighted to report that, in recognition of this work, we were joint recipients of an award at the Humber Education Business Partnership (EBP) Awards 2009, which recognise the work of businesses, young people, teachers and their schools and colleges. And it’s not just the work of members of staff at the school that have helped to achieve this. We’re always grateful to have the support of business school students in delivering widening participation, mentoring and international activities, and find that they benefit from this experience as much as the schools.

This was a very proud moment for our team and confirmation that our events really are helping to raise the aspirations of young people in the region. Our calendar of events for the 2009/10 academic year has just been published and it’s full of activities at Hull and Scarborough for a range of year groups.

One of our aims at the school is to work with people at all stages of their learning journey – from widening participation at school level to offering part-time programmes. If you want to get back into education or enhance your skills, our programmes covering business, management and logistics may be for you.

Employability Challenge - Full Report February 2009

The UK Commission wants to see two things. They want every school, college, university and training provider to treat the employability of their learners as part of their core business. They want a unified and coherent policy, assessment and funding framework that empowers teaching and training professionals to develop employability.
