Students create video profiles of hospital staff

Students from Longcroft School and Performing Arts College in Beverley have been working with Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to create video profiles of staff to be used as an aid for careers advice.

Students studying towards the creative and media diploma interviewed staff from Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital . In preparation, they devised and edited questions, scheduled the session, and rehearsed for the interviews.

With the support of teachers, the students successfully managed the entire project and overcame obstacles that a real life video shoot creates. The profiles will be circulated to all schools and colleges in the Hull and East Riding region.

In a presentation to the students, Patrick Appleyard, workforce development manager for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, praised the students for their hard work and professionalism.

He said: “The students produced superb resources which we are extremely happy to be sharing as part of our wider curriculum and careers support project.

“Their professionalism on the day and the quality of their work is a credit to them, their teachers and the school.”

Local organisation leads the way with new award

On 23 June 2010 the Humber Education Business Partnership (EBP) achieved the Award for Education Business Excellence.

The Award is run by the Institute for Education Business Excellence and accredits organisations to the Department for Education National Standard for Education Business Partnership Organisations (May 2008).  It recognises the continued efforts and high standards achieved by The Humber EBP in its ongoing work connecting education and the world of work for the benefit of young people in the area.

Sandra Cooper, General Manager of the Humber EBP said “We were delighted to receive this award which recognises all of the hard work that goes into making links between employers and education such a success. The team thoroughly deserves this accolade, which extends beyond the EBP to many of those with whom we work in partnership.’

The Award for Education Business Excellence is just one of a series of initiatives to professionalise the sector alongside the formation of a new professional body – the Institute for Education Business Excellence.  The Institute will offer national recognition with regional support, driving quality and innovation through the provision of specialist networks, expert practitioner groups and forums and a new CPD framework.

Declan Swan, CE of IEBE said: "The Institute for Education Business Excellence will provide quality assurance for organisations and professional development for practitioners working across Education Business Partnership Organisations. It's an exciting development which will ensure that employers and agencies wishing to get involved in education have access to networks of dynamic and high quality professionals.  The Institute is an open association so I urge any like-minded professionals working in the field of education business partnership activity to join us and participate in our work to change the way young people learn."

Employability and Skills Programme

The Humber EBP has launched a major new Employability Skills Programme designed to develop the qualities, attitudes and behaviours that underpin Communication Skills, Problem Solving, Team Work and Creative Thinking.  It comprises a series of short activities to be delivered to groups before they go out on Work Experience (although it could also be delivered as part of a Personal Development/Life skills Programme) to give learners a deeper understanding of the skills they need to practise on their placement.  These are the skills that have been identified as valuable by employers.
